OUR COUNTY

Is the smallest county in the state of West Virginia, and the farthest north, being at the tip of the Northern Panhandle. We were created from Brooke County in 1848, and named for John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

We are made up of the incorporated communities of Chester, New Cumberland and the City of Weirton. As well as the unincorporated communities of Chestnut Hill, Congo, Fairhaven, Kings Creek, Lawrenceville, Lennyville, Moscow, New Manchester, Newell and Sun Valley.

• The Hancock County Courthouse will be closed August 13th, 2024 due to a power outage.
• The Hancock County Commission will be holding a Workshop, August 15th, 2024 at 9 AM at the Hancock County Courthouse.
• The Hancock County Commission will be holding an Emergency Workshop, July 31st, 2024 at 9 AM at the Hancock County Courthouse.
• Small Business Administration Disaster documentation added to Community Postings.
• The Hancock County Courthouse will be closed July 4th & 5th in observance of Independence Day.

• The Hancock County Commission would like to remind everyone to remove all personal items and blankets from Three Springs, Union and Flatts Cemetery before mowing begins.
